How He Did It: Hitler’s Campaign to Control and Redefine Art @ Greeley Senior Center
Apr 26 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
How He Did It: Hitler’s Campaign to Control and Redefine Art @ Greeley Senior Center | Greeley | Colorado | United States

Hitler’s lifelong dream of becoming an artist was dashed when as a young man his applications were twice rejected by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Enraged by his rejection, Hitler claimed that Jewish control of art in Europe was the true cause of his rejection. Once he became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Hitler quickly began his systematic campaign to control and redefine art reflecting his own vision. This presentation demonstrates how Hitler established control of the art culture by using a variety of tactics, some of which include defining acceptable art, requiring artists to be certified by the state, appointing individuals into art leadership positions who shared his vision, sponsoring art exhibitions and shows and determining which artists and/or art were included, having art removed from art museums or destroyed in public bonfires.

Brown Bag presenter Dr. Pamela Hewitt, now retired, taught for 30 years in the UNC sociology department, including a course in the Sociology of Art. For the last 15 years she has been an artist working in a variety of media including: oil, acrylic, clay carving, plants and mixed media. Her artwork is both realistic and abstract. She is a member of the Greeley Art Association and served a three year term as its president. Her art has been in numerous art shows and she has won her share of ribbons and awards. Her historical and sociological interest in Hitler and the Third Reich goes back to her reading of Mein Kampf in high school. Hewitt’s presentation combines all three of her areas of interest: sociology, art, and German history.

History Brown Bags are free afternoon events that aim to provide cultural and historical context to topics related to Historic Preservation in and around Greeley. Unless otherwise noted, presentations are held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Greeley History Museum, 714 8th St. For more information about the Historic Preservation program, visit GreeleyGov.com/ HP or call 970-350-9222.
